Excerpts from...

The Chauffeur:

from Mrs.. Beeton's Household Management, New Edition ca.1920

The chauffeur's first duty is to possess a thorough knowledge of the mechanism and vagaries of the car he controls. After a run he should always clean the car, and before starting out again, see that all the parts are properly greased and oiled, that the tank.. has been filled, ...that the metal work is polished and the seating is clean.

When a long trip is contemplated, the chauffeur should always thoroughly acquaint himself with the route by a previous study of maps of the district. A good and steady driver is as essential to the comfort of the passengers as he is to the preservation of the car. With the good chauffeur, there should be no rush and bustle- everything should be done steadily and smoothly. The driver who keeps up a steady pace will arrive at his destination just as soon, perhaps sooner, than the man who proceeds in a series of rushes and jerks.

Besides being thoroughly honest and reliable, the ideal chauffeur should be a good driver, a good mechanic, and possess all of a coachman's skill and knowledge of how to treat his coach-work.
